Boat Wraps & Lettering in Newport

Transom names, hull graphics, registration numbers and full wraps in marine-grade 3M film rated 5+ years against salt and sun. 15+ years in Rhode Island. Quote in 24 hours.

Newport water eats cheap vinyl

A boat in a Newport slip takes salt spray, full southern exposure, freeze-thaw and a pressure washer twice a season. Standard calendered wrap film — the kind that is fine on a delivery van — shrinks, lifts at the edges and chalks out within a year of that. Owners find out in the spring, when the name on the transom has a hairline gap around every letter.

We use cast marine-grade 3M IJ180mC-10 with a matched overlaminate, rated 5+ years. Cast film is dimensionally stable, so it stays where it was laid and conforms to compound curves around the bow and the transom radius instead of fighting them. That is the whole difference between a wrap that looks right in year four and one you are peeling off in year one.

Marine work we do

Name & Hailing Port

Transom lettering with shadow, outline, gold-leaf look or metallic finishes. Cut from your typeface or drawn to suit the boat.

Full Hull Wraps

Solid colour, metallic, satin or printed graphics across the hull, superstructure and hardtop. Reversible, and a fraction of a respray.

Registration & Compliance

Bow registration numbers cut to the required height and contrast, documentation lettering and draft marks.

Stripes & Accents

Boot stripes, cove stripes, sheer lines and sponsor decals. The cheapest way to make a tired hull look new again.

Where we work on the water

Newport Harbour and the yards around it — plus the winter sheds where the real work gets done.

Newport Shipyard

Refit and superyacht yard at the north end of the harbour. Transom lettering, boot stripes, cove stripes and hull graphics scheduled around yard time.

Bowen's & Bannister's Wharf

Charter boats, launches and tenders working the wharves. Names, hailing ports and operator branding that has to read from the dock.

Goat Island & Ann Street Pier

Marina slips and the harbour shuttle traffic. Registration numbers, name boards and full wraps.

Fort Adams & Sail Newport

Race committee, coach and support boats. Sponsor decals, team graphics and numbering that survives a season of spray.

Thames Street waterfront

Charter offices, shops and restaurants along the water. Window lettering and A-frames that meet Newport's historic-district look.

Third Beach & Easton Point

Trailered boats, centre consoles and skiffs. Lettering and graphics done in the shop, off-season.

Melville & the Portsmouth yards

The winter storage sheds just north of the bridge. Best window in the year to get hull work done properly.

Jamestown & the Pell Bridge run

Dutch Harbor and Conanicut. Same trip for us — we cross both bridges from the shop.

Also serving Middletown, Portsmouth, Tiverton, Bristol, Jamestown, Wickford and Point Judith.

Book it in the fall, not in June

Vinyl bonds to a clean, dry, warm surface. That is a heated shed in January, not a windy dock in May with a 60-degree hull and a launch date on Friday. Every marine trade in Newport is compressed into the same two panic windows — the spring launch and the September boat show — and the work that comes out of those windows shows it.

If your boat is hauled between October and March, that is your slot. Trailerable boats come into our climate-controlled bay in North Kingstown and get done properly indoors. Bigger hulls we do on the hard at the yard. Either way the answer is the same: call us before the season, not during it.

Newport boat questions

Where are you based, and do you come to Newport?

Our shop is at 355 Compass Circle in North Kingstown, inside Quonset Business Park — about 30 minutes over the Jamestown and Pell bridges. Trailerable boats come to us and get wrapped indoors in a climate-controlled bay, which is always the better result. For boats in the water or on the hard, we come to you for lettering, graphics and hull work.

What vinyl do you use on boats? Regular wrap film will not last here.

Correct — it will not. We use marine-grade 3M IJ180mC-10 cast film with a matched overlaminate, rated for 5+ years of UV, salt and spray. The difference is the cast film's dimensional stability and the adhesive: standard calendered vinyl shrinks, lifts at the edges and chalks within a season in a Newport slip.

When is the best time to do a boat wrap?

Off-season, on the hard. October through March is when the hull is dry, clean, out of the water and accessible — and when the yards are not fighting you for space. Vinyl also needs a warm, dry, dust-controlled surface to bond properly, which is why indoor work beats a windy dock every time. Book the winter slot in the fall; the shed season fills.

Do you do the name, hailing port and registration numbers?

Yes, and that is the most common job. Transom name and hailing port, bow registration numbers to the state's size and contrast requirements, boot and cove stripes, sheer accents and documentation lettering. We cut from your typeface or draw one that matches the boat.

Can you wrap a whole hull?

Yes. Full hull wraps in solid colour, metallic, satin or printed graphics, plus superstructure and hardtop work. A wrap is reversible and a fraction of an Awlgrip respray, which is why a lot of owners use it to change a boat's look without committing the gelcoat to it.

What does a boat wrap cost?

Boat wraps start at $2,000. Transom name and hailing-port lettering is typically a few hundred dollars depending on size and finish. Full hull wraps are quoted by length, freeboard and complexity. Send us the make, model and length and a couple of photos and you get a real number back within 24 hours.

The boat show is in September. Can you get me ready in time?

If you call us in August, yes. September is the tightest month on the calendar in this town — every yard, every canvas shop and every graphics shop is running to the same deadline. Give us lead time and your boat is done properly rather than rushed.
